    Default Arctic Fulmar

One of my rare forays into avian photography. Taken in Svalbard, Norway from a moving ship. The fulmars often flew alongside the boat and would actually get fairly close as they approached the bow area. This one was against an overcast sky as we traveled north in search of polar bears.

    Rachel:

Always glad to have you visit. I think you will find we aren't really a pack of ravenous hyenas.

I like the high key effect, soft light with nice details revealed on the wings leading edge, nice angle in frame and comp.

    Tiny but helpful catchlight.

    Cheers

    Hi Rachel,
    Welcome to "the dark side..."
The fulmar is sharp with great incoming pose and good DOF considering your aperture of F5.Love the feather detail on the belly and beak.
I am not a lover of high key images...but if I was then I would love this image! I wonder if you could pull out the grey that was in the sky?

Hi Rachel - Love the IQ and details in the face and belly feathers. I like the angled position in the frame as well as the translucency of the main flight feathers.

I like the sharpness, details, IQ and how the bird fills the frame. Well done Rachel!

How sweet is this! Unlike Gail, I am a fan of well done high-key images...so this rocks my boat (and it did yours literally I guess!) Very sharp face and very nice feather details under the wings. I also like the angled flight pose.

Super details and sharpness to this high key portrait, Rachel. So fun to get such a great, heads on view of a bird many of us will never see in person.
