Here's a Broad-tailed Hummingbird photographed in a multiple-flash setup with a black BG. The effect can be pretty dramatic!

    Canon 1Dx, 500mm II, f/11, 1/250, ISO 320, 2 flashes, manual exposure, hand held

Hi Doug, now this is very different, and it certainly works for me. I like how you have set up the flashes to only illuminate the head and chest of the HB, which in turn shows up the iridescence very well. Well thought out.

A unique and compelling hummer shot. Only this wing position would capture the black bill against the black background. Nice one!

    Really like this.
Very dramatic and showy. Super detail and agree with Bill re:bill position against the wing.
Congrats on the work/thought involved with this image.

Stunning, very dramatic shot. I like it a lot. Where were the flashes positioned to get this effect?

Awesome and unique shot that really puts the emphasis on the stunning breast colors and detail. Almost has a 3D effect. You are a real master at these hummer set ups.

Thanks Ivan. One flash was placed at feeder level in front of the bird and one was placed above and behind the bird.

One heck of a capture Doug! Not sure you could have asked for a better bill/wing position. You've got to print this one out and if you can't find someplace to hang it I'll hold a spot in my living room until you decide! :)

Very intriguing I just keep staring at it.

only critique I feel sorry these hummingbirds, they are all blinded when we are through with them.... Good thing we trade for sugar water
