I know that there is a lot wrong with this image but I love how the male cardinal is checking out this female cowbird. Nikon D800, 300 f2.8, 2X TC, tripod. 1/250, f6.3, ISO 1600. Cropped, WB, Blacks, Clarity in ACR. USM in CS6.

There is a lot right with this image too. Post processing was handled very well in regards to noise control with that dark background. It is cool how the cardinal seems to be checking her out. Don't blame him...I think female cowbirds are pretty in their own unassuming way. Would like to have seen this same image shot with a 1.4 instead of the 2x, just in regards to having more dof for the rock...

I like the look and expression of the Cardinal. Pretty funny. The shot looks good to me and the detail in the birds is nice. Maybe another round of NR on the BG. Nice work Jack.

    Jack,
I really like the comical look and both birds sharp.
The foliage would be great except it is oof so to me just distracts so I think the focus should just be on the birds.
Hope you don't mind. The D800 makes this so easy but you should save your photos to a larger file size, this was
just 230kb and you can save to 400.

nice interaction, details and exposure are great, the perch, especially the OOF part is a bit distracting but Dan's repost addressed it to some extend.

Hi Jack, studying your image, and before scrolling down, my first thoughts would be to crop up from the bottom, and Dan's repost sorted that out nicely. ( The part of the OOF rock was too great in the FG ) The inquisitive pose from the cardinal is priceless, and good detail captured on both birds. Great positioning from you to have both posed against the darker BG.

Nice head tilt on the Cardinal, it makes him look so inquisitive. Nice detail on the birds.

I thank you all very much for your input. The crop from the bottom cuts off the cardinal's "virtual tail" and although the greenery is oof I like the color it contributes to the image. Thanks all.

    Jack
