    Default Sunflower Feast

My buddy and BPN'er Allen Sparks found a sunflower patch that had active and semi-cooperative goldfinches feeding in it. Shot this there a few days ago. Very slight crop for comp., USM to subject at 63, NR to BG. All C&C welcome.

Light quality is excellent. Colors are vibrant and eye pleasing. Background is controlled very well. Subject is posed nicely with a perfect head angle. Compositionally, at the time of capture, less focal length at this working distance would have been nice, as I wish to see more of the sunflower heads focused...but beyond that, consider cropping straight up 4x6 as is with space taken off the right...leaves the subject centered a bit more, but I think it works better too.

    Hi Shawn,

I had a minute to play around with that crop. I agree that works better even with the bird more centered. Thanks

Hi Lyle, I like the placement of the goldfinch on top of the sunflower, and a bonus thats he's feeding. A good mixture of yellows throughout the image, they all work well together, and I agree with Shawn - seeing more of the sunflower in the DOF range would have put this up a few notches. Still, an opportunity well used.

    Lyle:

Agree with Shawn and Stuart. The bird is excellent, soft bg, but the very vibrant, OOF sunflower petals are a bit distracting.

You can tone them down a bit by reducing their luminance, which will reduce their impact a bit.

    Cheers

Hi Lyle - Excellent IQ and sweet light. The pose, feeding and eye all look great to me. I like the yellow background, but would consider to change the blue in the top middle border to yellow as well. Ditto on the comments regarding the sunflowers.

Nice light on the bird and the Sunflower. Really nice b/g. The bird is well lit and beautifully composed. I might be tempted to darken the seed in his mouth.

I like the frame with the exception of the OOF flowers. I suspect that no amount of DOF would have gotten them in focus though.

Nice one Lyle. The bird is nice and sharp and is on a beautiful perch. Good looking BG and nice complementary colors make for a very pleasing image. One of your best! Well done.
