Although I could see a few of these guys staking out their territory on the rocks along the trail, they'd disappear before I could get close enough to get a shot and pop back out after I passed. Found a spot where I could lay on the ground and scan a couple of different outposts and waited for one to come back out of hiding. Of course they never returned to the rocks I expected but this guy came out of a little space close enough to get a decent shot. 7D, 400DO + 1.4xTCII, f6.3, 1/320s, ISO 1250, HH, cropped all around for comp.

Hi Steve - this is really nice with excellent detail and good choice on the dof. I like the color palette and low pov as well. Your patience paid off.

Hey Steve, great detail and sharp where it needs it......love the environs as well! I hiked a mile in Yellowstone with log hopping with my 300-800 to get an image of these guys.......won't do it again! They are cute though!

So cute, and sharp! What would you think about lightening and somewhat desaturating the dark rock at the top of the frame? If it were me, I'd try to blend it in with the lighter one below it. Then you have lovely light edges that make the beautiful and subtle tones in the pika really stand out.

Superb Steve, looks really good, with excellent detail, clarity and sharpness. Love the subtle muted colours. Looks like your PP has also kicked up a gear too?

    Nice work.

Thanks to all for the comments.

    Diane,
Thank you for the suggestion. I tried it and it certainly does make the pika stand out. One of the things I liked about the dark rock at the top was how it helped the curve of the lighter rock stand out and form a curved roof over the pika and kind of sandwiched the pika with the darker band on the bottom. I suspect my preference for layered colors played a part in keeping it this way as well.

Hi Steve, excellent detail on the little guy, especially seeing all those whiskers. I like how the head is posed against the OOF lighter rock BG. Well thoughtout for positioning yourself for a low angled shot, and you nailed it here.
