Thought I would keep Rachel company. Again shot in Svalbard on a moving Ice breaker, but several years prior.

Great Polar Bear shot. I like the eye contact and the composition. Good to see some of the habitat.

It's great to see these animals of the Arctic. I start having the feeling that I would have to make this trip sometime in the future. Your techs are fabulous as usual. The ice was perfectly exposed with good details, the bear was sharp. The only thing I would wish fr, but know it can't be done is a lower shooting angle. I think for that you would need to get on a zodiac or something :)!

    Hi Steve

Really great shot! Nice portrait. I do see that the ice in this pic to is somewhat crystalized.

Hi Steve - nice sitting pose and eye contact with excellent detail as usual. I do think the greens in the bg are a bit strong and would consider dropping them a bit.

Steve, great POV and eye contact in this image.

I tidied up the whites a little to help them sing, and also put a burned the darks on the ice the bear is sitting on. WDYT?

Thanks folks, Rachel I'm ok with the 'greens', I just feel it needed a little colour in the whites as per the original, otherwise it can, IMHO, look a little stark.

Yep, fine with that Russell, also takes out the slight warmth in the snow too, although remember, snow/ice is never white, thanks for the RP.

    Hey Steve,
I am fine with the colors in either and I love the light and environs. You know I don't mind tight crops.....but I would take the water out of the top frame edge and just leave snow......although I know you aren't a tight crop fan like I am !

I like to think my subjects have room to move within frame and not in a straight jacket, LOL. Nice to have you back, we've missed you.

Steve, I really like this image with nice eye contact and perfect exposure. As Loi pointed out I would have liked a slightly lower shooting angle. Was there a reason you could not go lower? I have never photographed a polar bear in the wild hence the question. TFS.

Hi Bhushan, PB are the most dangerous animal you will really encounter and where you will be escorted with someone who cares a firearm. I have never experienced it in Africa, (but have not done bush walks) or in Katmai for Grizzly bears, although that is a National park where firearms are not allowed. Even in town, Svalbard, I have witnessed women carrying rifles whilst pushing strollers, as bears can be unpredictable.

So can you get lower, yes, but generally only in a zodiac. You would not get close as this on the pack ice, it's just too dangerous, even on board ship, generally camera straps are not allowed for fear of the bear making a lunge, but different people have different guidelines. Hippos and bears in my book command the hugest respect and I love them!

Nice warmth to the light here, Steve. Usual great detail and contrast.
Just curious, why would you say you wish you had the 1Dx and 200-400 here? You've got enough room around (and 400mm would have been even further away) and you weren't shooting at high ISO?

    Hey Steve,
I like the relaxed pose of the bear and of course the detail in both animal and surroundings is excellent. I actually like both posts, yours is warmer, Russell's crisper and cooler. Would depend on my present mood at the time of processing.

Steve, I think the subject has been captured really well and the exposure looks spot on - both versions look great.
I am not sure about the composition. Roman suggests he would like a tighter crop. I would be interested to see a more rectangular crop with the PB more to the right of the frame to give more of a feeling of the wide open spaces.
