Ain't they cute? I could spend all day photographing them.

Young Alpine Marmot, National Park Hohe Tauern, Austria. This one is not yet fully grown but in a few weeks it will start to hibernate.

EOS 1DX, EF 4/600L IS II, EF 2x III, tripod, Wimberley II, 1/200, f9, ISO 800.

I will post a series of images of those cute fellows which I took over the last weekend in Austria (Franz-Josefs-Höhe, near Großglockner).

    Hope you like them.

Maybe I should have left 1cm more room at the bottom. What do you think?

    Hi Markus

Very cute little marmot. I like that the picture is so clean a really nice portrait. Good working with 600m and 2x converter, at only 1/200s, it´s perfectly sharp. How is this animals, are they shy of people or not?

Tech wise I can detect a blu cast over the marmot and also in the BG, otherwise to my eyes fine. Maybe some more light?

Gregor, they eat out of your hand. Used long lens because I was photographing a distant one when this young showed up. 1200 was perfect for background. But I took most shots with EF 4/200-400 1.4x.

Even wide angle will work with many of them but then the background will often be awful, e.g. a house.

Hi Markus - I changed your font to black as depending on the skin you use for BPN the white is not always readable. Nice choice on the dof and f9. Excellent detail and sharpness too. I would have preferred a little higher pov so as to eliminate some of the oof fg. Gregor is correct that there is a definite blue cast and a bit of cyan too, easily correctable. Looking forward to more.

Hi Markus a nice portrait, and I agree on the above observations, plus yours for adding a bit more below. Just watch those 'dusty bunnies' creeping in.

    Markus,

I would concur a bit more room below would be nice. I would also lessen room on top some.

Overall the image is very pleasing and presents the Marmot in a very creative manner (OOF BG and FG - curve of grass nestles him in nicely). Well done.

Hoi Markus, very nice image of this Murmeltier :) I as well would like a bit room on the bottom, but we cannot have everything.
Eating out of your hand, wow not here in Swissyland!

I like the angle and soft light...I too see blue/cyan in the darker fur.
    Looking forward to more!

Nice simple, pleasing profile of this fun to photograph species.
