Hi Joe. You did well with the detail here and capturing the open bill. Is there food in that bill? Hard to tell. I also like the flying sand at the feet. I feel the image is a little busy and tight mostly because of the placement of the chick touching the oof greens in the bg but I think the main reason I feel that is because it is shot vertical. I wonder if it would feel more roomy if it were shot horizontal which would also go well with the horizontal shadow. Does that make sense to you?
Very nice -- I think it would also be interesting to compare a horizontal crop. Great DOF and nicely presented subject in a pleasing habitat.
I cropped it this way to eliminate much of the distracting debris that has found it's way into the colony. This is a public beach with the colony being roped off , but people are slobs , and can't bring themselves to use the trash cans. Just the other night a beach ball was blowing around on the ground and spooking the birds.
