I was at the local bird sanctuary this morning checking to see if any fall migrants were coming through. No luck there, but Dave Chiemlewski came by and mentioned that there was an international equestrian event occurring 15 minutes away, and he had enjoyed photographing it the previous day.
So, I had a few minutes to grab some different gear and buzz over. The event was four days long, and was winding down, but still some action. It was late in the morning, the light was harsh, but I enjoyed scouting it for next year.
This fellow and his horse made it look easy! This was after another rider crashed while going over the same jump as I walked onto the field.
Lots of sound to accompany the action, thumps, heavy breathing, hoof beats, and a few curses thrown in.
Pretty cool. Birds will always be my main photographic fun (not counting the kids), but it is always fun to branch out and try other stuff too. Love the intense look of the rider...
That's pretty cool Randy and a nice experience to shoot outside of our norm. I used to ride horses when I was young but looking at this image only reminds me that my horse would always stop just before the jump and you can just guess where I ended up!!LOL Thanks for sharing!
extremely nice shot of an event rider. The horse would be critiqued for bad form, not the photo just the horse.
typical jump photos are from a side angle so best to see horses form over jump (even knees) and rider equitation.
that said this is a very hard shot to get, I think birds are easier personally.... Nobody owns birds, horse owners are extremely picky and protective about keeping flawed photos hidden. This could be as minor as eye boogers on the horse, the picture gets hidden.
the riders expression is great and he is doing what all jumpers are supposed to, finding and seeing the next jump before you are done with the last.
from a horse person perspective I might crop this right at the top of the log jump, this will minimize the horses jump form and draw more attention to the riders expression and horses concentration in the face.
may I ask where this was taken, or name of event??
Photographing a 3 day event is one of my favorites ESP cross country. Wish we had these events down here. You did great with this image!! If you wish to photograph crashes the water obstacle is usually the best place to be.
Linz - this was taken at the Richland Park Horse Trials. I don't know how big of an event it is, just swung by on a lark, but a friend said it attracted an international crowd.
The shooting angle was dictated by the clutterred background to the right and the light angle. I will keep your pointers in mind however, in case I have another go at it.
Cheers
Randy
