Here's another image of the cute little fellas that resided inside my folks' BBQ at their cottage. They were a challenge to photograph as there were four of them, usually bunched up together, most of them wriggling around, and many times hidden by nesting material. The macro lens was the only good lens in my kit to use in this situation. Once in a while one would give a good view out in the clear...but by then it was time to close back the lid in order not to disturb them for too long. I liked this one a lot because of the nice view of the skin flap on the forearm that it will use at a later age to help "flying".

Canon 7D + 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/200s., f/6.3, ISO 800, fill flash @-2 FEC, almost FF (and do wish for a tad more space above).

Hi Daniel - a great look at these cuties. Looks like the macro lens was the way to go. I agree with you on the skin flap. I know you had limited time so this is excellent as is but I might have tried to get the whole rear foot in.

    Rachel

Wonderful detail and lighting, and too cute!!

Alternatively, just a little could come off the bottom (to crop the foot) and right. Not being that familiar with flying squirrels (my own fault), I don't see an obvious "wing".

Daniel, I think this is the best in your series! The eye is so sharp and I have no idea the function of the skin flap until I read your description. I agreed with Rachel that the rear foot is a fit strange hanging by itself. Loi

Hi Daniel, I think the previous one had more going for it, although this still retains the cute factor. Crop works well, happy with the room above and the slight turn of the head almost conveys a very sleepy subject. Are the wing folds bigger when they are born so the 'grow' into them, or do they just grow with the subject? Nice techs, do you ever find that camera shake is a bigger issue with the macro lens? Personally the head grabs my attention, so the foot just creeping in is fine with me.

Thank you Daniel! I have a very soft spot for these little baby squirrels and I find your images simply irrezistible. Some years ago I watched a program on TV about them and was fascinated with their ability to "fly", or rather glide, for distances up to 80m or more-great adaptation to the environment I love to see the folded membrane here; sharp on the eye and ears and of course whiskers ( these little guys are born hairless but with a nice bunch of whiskers!)

How tiny and precious they are! Thank you for sharing this with us, Daniel, a very special image.

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
