    Default No Easy Lunch

This Marabou Stork caught a Terrapin and attempted to swallow the Terrapin whole. He got it down several times, but then ended up spitting it out, and eventually gave up.

Nice stork. Beautiful habitat and light. I do wish for a better HA but you got what you got sometimes!

I used to feel that way about spinach.
Wish the stork were turned a bit more towards the camera , but as we all know , the birds don't listen very well. Still a fine image with good comp , color and detail.

Excellent image in several regards. The prey item shows well and the behavior was captured at a peak moment. Just enough shutter speed to sharply render the action too. I like the visual balance with the grass in the fg and the (burnt?) brush in the bg. I think the action trumps the head angle issue here.

Nice to see a maribou stork on the ground. I only ever saw them in trees or flying overhead.
I like the terapin and wish I could see him even closer up. I think if the IQ could stand it ,a portait of just head and beak and turtle would be cool!
I like the eye level view. It was obviously a cloudy day and your techs handled this well.
I would clone out the OOF blade of golden grass cutting across the beak.
His leading leg seems to be deformed? An old fracture ?
    Wonderful opportunity well seized,
    Gail

In French when someone is in a foul mood one of the expressions we use is that the person is "marabou"...I'll bet this fella felt that way when lunch did not go according to plan! Pretty cool behaviour you witnessed here, and you got a pretty image to show for it. I do agree that a better HA would have been ideal, but it is also true that the behaviour gets us to forgive that somewhat. There are three grass blades I'd get rid of...the one cutting across both mandibles, the smaller one touching the lower mandible, and the one touching the leg...all minor that should be easy to do.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Much appreciated.

yeah, it's too bad about the head angle. I chose this one as the best compromise among head angle, the prey, and the neck position.

very funny Daniel regarding the expression marabou for someone in a foul mood ;). Now I know why.

Great IQ on this ugly fellow. The colors look perfect, his leading leg does look damaged.
