    Default Gear help

Hello, I currently have a 300mm f2.8 is vi lens that I normally shoot with on a 1d mark iv and a 70-200mm f2.8 is ii lens that I use on my 5d mark iii. 90% of the time my 2x iii extender is attached to the 300. Even though I have been happy with this combo I was thinking about upgrading to a 500mm/600mm vi lens. To do this I would have to trade my 300mm lens or keep it and trade my 5d mark iii. Another options would be to trade the 300 and 5d and upgrade to a 500mm f4 is ii. I have been tossing and turning over what to do. Would you trade the 300 or the 5d? Thanks so much for your help.

    Hi Thomas,
I would trade in the 300mm. The new 500mm and 600mm are amazing- fast, sharp and lighter. If you get the 500 or 600 you won't use your 300mm anyway and you can put your 1.4x on your 70 to 200 and get the 300mm length, albeit you lose 1 stop so you would have F4 instead of 2.8,
    Gail

I agree with Gail, you can use either extender on your 70-200mm f/2.8 and even go down to an f/4 for a lighter load, then use your new Series II lens on your 1D4. Either body will handle the 500 or 600mm easily, but the 1D4 will be considerably better with extenders, where the 5D3, which is otherwise excellent, slows down a bunch.

CPS recently loaned me the 500/f4-II. It's really light compared to my Series I and the IS is simply amazing, allowing me to hand hold 1,000mm shots at 1/80-sec. I'll borrow the 600mm later this year. I'm tossing and turning about the 500/600 decision, but I'll least have had both in hand before I make up my mind.
