Default Early morning fog in Cades Cove

This is from May 2012. I did a lot of tonal work in Lightroom and used Topaz Clarity, combined layers and duplicated, then I used Topaz Simplify at a low level with lots of detail so the grass would show up. I ended up using that layer in soft light mode. Then I used a golden texture called Afterglow from Swoon the Moon, masked off the fog and mountains about 25%. Wow, it looks more golden that it did in Photoshop! What do you think? Do you like the lightness of the grasses? They were quite dark in the original capture and I wanted them brighter.

Judy, it looks like you PS work paid off! I think it's a lovely scene and I really like the golden foreground. I'm not sure about the sky - maybe it could be darker? a slightly different tint? More fog? Hopefully someone else will chime in and we can kick it around.

Very nice, Judy! I love the golden glow to the grasses and the fog around the hills. I agree with Cheryl that the sky could perhaps be a little darker.

Thanks Cheryl and Christopher. I agree the sky is blah, but I did add a medium blue gradient to darken it in Lightroom. The gold texture lightened it a bit more but the only place the actual blue showed was in the URC, the rest of the sky is actually yellow from the sun-on-fog in the sky on the right especially. I tried the saturation eyedropper and it picked yellow not blue, before I added the texture! So there wasn't much I could do with saturation as blue saturation didn't help except the URC. I would have to paint it or use a gradient I suppose. I'm open to suggestions.

Hi Judy, I used Render Lighting Effects Filter in CS5 and selected a color close to the grass color. Then I played around with the size and direction.
I have used this filter before to colorize a white sky.

I think its a lovely composition you've come up with, lets see what others can do. TFS

Thanks Paul, that looks good. I tried to use lighting effects in Ps CC and don't know how, I ended up with a spotlight effect on black, image was gone. It may be that you have to do it on a blank layer but I didn't try it yet. I am sure there is a tutorial online, probably at Adobe TV.

I scrolled up a bit to "crop" some of the sky out and think it focused the eye more on the mtn and grasses. might give that a try. Love the restful effect of all your work on this. The golden grass actually reminds me of California.

Thanks Hazel, and for the cropping suggestion. I haven't had time to work on it yet.

Judy, I think the lightened grass looks great and I was also thinking that it looked like my part of the country - California. I like Paul's version as well, but your original sky looks good to me. I like the contrast between the fog and the clear sky above, very nice.
