Hi All, this is the same Croc I posted yesterday but with the whole Croc including tail this time. I have intentionally left a bit more habitat in this image. I don't think the image is quite as menacing as the last but let me know what you think.. Taken with 50D & 70 to 200 F2.8 @ 110 mm, 1/1000 sec @ F5.6, ISO 800 Hand held in a boat. regards DON

Hi Don, comparing the two, I much prefer the first/original post, as it seems to be a lower POV which I like and the menacing impression, however both shots may have been taken in the same spot? Really like the placement within frame, sit well IMHO. Now the lower POV might just be a trick of the 500 as you are tighter in, compared to the wider 70-200? Again, personal choice, but having more 'habit' I feel does not add much to the overall image and as presented a little distracting, as it's all about the big boy, the croc IMHO, but it's just individual tastes. Also I feel the IQ is better on the previous post, but that is probably down to the body used, but taking into account you were also shooting from a boat, I feel you did remarkably well, not the easiest to shoot from at the best of times. Going with the crop as is, I would just crop a sliver off the top to remove the brighter branch coming in on the top right. Alternatively I would just crop the above to a 16 x 9 to retain the focus on the subject more, add a Curves adjustment just to bring a bit more mid tone to the croc and then slightly blur the BKG again, WDYT?

Hi Steve, you always seem to make my images better... Regarding POV, same Croc, same time, but we were closer (hence the switch to the 70-200) so the angle down to the Croc gets steeper the closer you get. I noticed he has pulled in his back leg in as we got closer, I might have got even more nervous if I had noticed that on the day. We were told on the day the guides judge the approach distance to the crocs on the size of the belly and the position of the rear legs. Big bellies and legs spread behind means recently feed and relaxed = Safer to approach, while skinny bellies and legs forward means ready to attack = run away fast...!

I too prefer the original image, but he did not have a tail and DOF was more of an issue in that so I thought I would test the waters with this offering. thanks for your help..

What I like best about the image is the tail, and I love that it is touching the water and the wavelet in front of it. I like the crop Steve chose for the repost. In both versions I wonder if lightening the shaded eye and shadows around it would work...

    Hi Daniel,

Wondered if anyone would notice the wave... Good thought about the eyes, i will see if it draws a little more attention to the Croc..

    Thanks for looking Dan

Hi Don, I really like they way you captured this croc, and it is always good to see some the environment as well His fat tail shows that he is in great condition

I prefer Steve's crop ( hmm... Steve makes all images better, when he does RP's on our images, myself and my partner say we've been "Steved")

    Kind regards,

Hi Don - I do like the inclusion of the entire tail. Steve makes some excellent points about POV and angle. I like the comp but again it's nice to see something different and you did the hard part in the field.

Nice shot Don. I love that massive tail and the way the croc pops from the dark top half of the BG.
Steve's repost has increased tonal quality.
With all the comparisons to the previous post, I'll have to go look for it now...
