Herewith an image from Rooiputs-a lovely remote camp in the Kalahari on the Botswana side. Taken last year in March. The lion clan kept walking through the camp every day, on their way to the water hole nearby. At the back is the A-frame, a light wooden construction that provides shade for our equipment (table, chairs, solar panels, stove, water containers, etc). No proper ablutions there, no fences, no facilities. I have never felt uncomfortable in the presence of lions-during the day they are normally lying under trees in the shade. At night we are more careful, these gentle felines become fierce predators, so no running and no wondering too far (no matter how many bottles of red were consumed during the evening meal). One early morning our neighbors complained that their spade disappeared- it was not to be found again. While adults are used to human presence and smell, the young are still learning. They are curious and playful, a mere shower bag can provide endless entertainment for them-we pack away all that we can when we leave the camp in the mornings...
Just thought I'd give you an idea of what it is like-this is my favorite place on Earth and it has a very special place in my heart. This is where Charlie the big male roared at 11 pm in front of our tent, this is where the Cape Cobra made its way quietly past our table, and this is where I discovered the cutest Tree Rat nest, babies and all. We are going back there in September, I cannot wait, counting every minute...
Great shot here Gabriela! Love the Kgalagadi for the same reasons you do.
Rachel - there's a bush shower and toilet about 20 meters from the campsite for each site
....Jaaa Morkel, but there's no water!Shower bags only! In March 2012 I had a spotted hyaena for company when I tried to use the "bush facilities"...But it's fun...When do we meet in the Kalahari again, Morkel? We're off in September
