    Default A Jigsaw Puzzle

I thought hard before posting this in Avian (or anywhere for that matter),
but I like the photo a lot. My favorite tree, the Pacific Madrone, this was on the steep shore of
San Juan Island in the Puget sound.
Taken from a small boat off shore. The mods can move it if they don't feel it is an Avian photo.
Almost FF, I had the captain of the boat move out farther off shore to get more of the tree and less of the Eagle.
Not sure how many people will look judging from how the thumbnail will look!

I like it. It would be a nice photo even without the Eagle. My only nitpick would be the little branch that's sticking up, blocking part of the Eagle's wing.

Hmmmm ... I don't know .... I like the tree, but am not sure the eagle adds anything here (and, although I'm looking at this on a crummy monitor at work, the whites on his head appear blown). I would almost be happier with this one without the bird. The tree itself is really cool.

I was up in that neck of the woods a few years ago ... very pretty scenery!

    Hi Dan,

    interesting challenge on this one!

I tried cropping from the top and a little from the left to place the head of the eagle nearer the upper right power point of the grid. Worked better for me - keeping the emphasis on the tree and giving more interest to the eagle.

I can absolutely see why you love this one. The tree is your subject here, and what a great tree. I think it would have been more powerful had the eagle been placed to the right without the large trunk going through it. I also think the eagle's white head feathers appear blown and need to be toned down a bit.

Just like Eric stated; It would be a nice photo even without the Eagle.
Great out of the box image, Dan.

I'm also a fan of the overall shot. That tree is worth the focus all on its own. I just wish the eagle was facing into the frame instead of out of it.

A great puzzle indeed. My Mom would love doing this puzzle.
I have looked at this one several times and have not looked at any other posts so as to be truthfully unbiased.
I am trying to like this because I am always the first to complain that all our shots start to look the same after a while and we all need to think and see differently.
I think this would work better if the eagle was placed in the upper right third intersection point and crop a bit off the left.
I like the colors that run through the picture.
But what I don't like is the nictitating membrane on the eagles' right eye is visible. Do you have another image like this but with both eyes wide open?
I think this shot needs to be one or the other ie. -all about the tree or use the tree as an accent to the eagle and feature the eagle more prominently.
But heck, what do I know?!!! I am the least artistic person on this board!!

This is one of those images you just feel the need to study for a while. What a cool environment. I love those branches and the different colors and angles to them. I like the surprise element of the eagle as it takes the imasge to a totally different place but have to agree that placing the eagle more to the right would have taken it to the top.

I too have looked at this for a while and have come to the conclusion that I like the whole scene abut the giant awesome tree is the focal point. I dont mind the placement of the eagle much but the nictitating membrane and the hot whites are the only issues for me. I always like an artistic twist like this. Well done Dan.

That is one awesome tree, never heard of it before. I agree with Marina, I think the eagle would pop more if the big trunk was not behind it.
