Default Full body Northern Flying Squirrel.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a full-frame head and upper body image of this individual that has taken up residence in one of my folks' BBQs at the cottage (inside the closed lid, nest on top of the grill). Here is a full body image. This was the cleanest angle I could get it all in, and there was a young flexible spruce in front that I had my son gently bend away while I took a few frames.

What we've since learned is that this nest is not a only daytime roost, but rather an actual nest that has four babies inside!! They are currently almost still fully naked and about 1.5 inches long, eyes closed. They should be really cute in a few weeks time but I'm not sure I'll be able to make it being so busy and all. The BBQ is obviously now out of commission for the summer (it's OK, there are three more on the property)...good thing my parents respect nature too, and they actually love the nest there with no intention of getting rid of it

Hi Daniel, you will have to find the time to photograph the little ones! If Mom is so cute, I can only imagine what the young look like...

Love the detail on the squirrel, the glint in the eye, also the pose. I also like seeing that tad of green foliage in the BG. And I enjoyed reading the story that goes with the image, thank you !

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Daniel - this works really well with nice light, detail, sharpness and the catchlight in the eye. I do find the darker area on the bark to the right a little distracting and wonder if it can be lessened but not a deal breaker by any means. I agree with Gabriela that you'll have to try to photograph the babies.

    Rachel

Hi Daniel. good find and being able to save the nest. Very nice and sharp, love the catch light. Agreed with Rachel that the dark area on the tree is a little distracting, but minor. Loi

I like! Great cuteness factor, nice light/falloff balance and good sharpness.
When you say natural light, what was the light source? I'm asking since it's got the look&feel of a "setup"?

What a cutie! Add my request for pictures of the babies. In fact, how about an inflight image... With 6 subjects at hand, that should be easy!

    Thanks guys!!

Morkel, this tree is close to the BBQ in question...and when the lid is opened it jumps onto it like this, easy pickings for me! The light is just late afternoon sun...

    Diane, I'll try my best!!

Hi Daniel, the light really makes it for me, just enough to bring focus to the head and then tails off nicely towards the foot of the image, just perfect placement. Would like to see an option where there is less tree and more BKG to the left, just wonder if the tree is perhaps a little dominant? Good sharpness where it needs to be, with excellent DOF, the catchlight certainly helps and nice to see a natural one too. This little chappie is certainly creating some unique images for you and hope it's a nice change from Avian as well.

Hi Daniel, love it and the flying squirrels too. I have not seen one for several years now, but at our family cottage over by Parry Sound we used to have many show up at the bird feeders at night to gorge on the sunflower seeds...but then the bears started hanging out and destroying the bird feeders at night also.
