Village Weaver males are fighters and competition for food and females ensure the survival of their species-they are extremely entertaining to watch and one is often rewarded with spectacular scenes. I spent hours last Sunday trying to capture such moments, this is just one of them...

Gabriela, I spent a bit of time looking at your blog photos. Lord am I jealous. I know we have many animals and birds in North America but wow...South Africa has it all. I love the Lions, the Serval is special, I've never even seen one in a Zoo. The wide Horned Cape Buffalo image is my favorite. Your image above captures a moment in time and you've done a good job with the composition. My taste would probably be to lighten the background slightly...but again that's just my taste. Very nice capture.

    Dear Paul,

Thank you so much for this lovely message, I have never been to your part of the world but I am sure it is pretty amazing too. Having said this, I must admit I am very lucky to live in Africa. Only few km away from our home there's Hluhluwe Game Reserve with its famous Big 5 ( rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo). We also have cheetahs and servals, wild dogs, spotted hyaenas, jackals and a great number of predatory birds. St Lucia Estuary (a World Heritage Site) is only 45 minutes' drive from where we live, and this is a very special place, since the hippos, sharks and crocodiles share this very special environment. Should you ever decide you wish to come to South Africa and explore this area (Kwazulu Natal), let us know and we'll help you find accomodation and plan the trip in a cost effective way.

Regarding this image, the reason why I darkened it so much is the BG was quite busy. I will soon post some images of these Weavers in the Avian section, some need quite a bit of work though, I shot at F8 to try and get two or three birds in focus and unfortunately the leaves in the BG are quite overwhelming.

Thank you again Paul, I truly appreciate your kind comments

Gabriela, I love this series of the "warring" weavers. I like the dark background and I think you could crop some from the bottom and still have a pleasing composition.

Another amazing capture of the weavers! Very nice presentation with the black background. I agree with Cheryl, you could take a little off of the bottom.

Hi Gabriela! You have captured a moment here and the processing is truly beautiful! I love the feather detail especially and you have nailed the sharpness.....another vote for cropping some from the bottom. My wife and I will be going to Kenya next month so I hope we get to see the big 5 and some amazing birds from your part of the world. Looking forward to seeing more of your work! TFS

Hi Gabriela, I like the brilliant colors, and contrast, as well as the intensity of the eyes. Excellent processing on this. Agree on a smidge off the bottom, but not a huge deal. Very nicely done !
