    Default Warthog!

Our group came to love the warthog and would yell warthog! every time we saw them. These critters are a bit shy and they would turn tail and run into the tall grass. This guy was an exception. We saw him and his family foraging in the tall grass, stopped the vehicle and waited for them. Eventually he came out and gave me a clear shot.

Hi Loi - a very nice look at the warthog. I think this is one of the best you have posted from your recent trip so far. The low pov and comp work very well. Nice sharpness too. I think you can bring out a little more detail by selectively opening up the midtones on the warthog a bit more. I would also try opening the eye up with a screen adjustment applied just to the eye. Finally, there's a bit of blue coming through in some of the darker areas, most noticeable below the ear. A few easy and minor tweaks will really take this up a notch.

    Rachel

Hi Loi, OK seems like a lot of views with only one comment, so:
Well composed, with a nice low POV, good body posture with the HA to camera, all in all, well done.

Now, to the image, to me it does have a cast to it, if you take a WB reading you will easily get the correct mid grey to start with, which is your starting point IMHO. I agree that you need to open up the eye and shadow areas, but perhaps in various degrees. There is more tone & detail you can extract to give more form to the subject, remember this is ALL selective and by using masks you can target key areas. Looks well balanced in terms that you have detail, but have not blown the whites in the tusks, however you can get more from them to give finer detail. Images like this need to start with the WB looking right, INMHO you have captured the information, you just need to 'selectively' extract it. I think going cooler rather than warmer with the reds will help, you have a direction in which to explore as a comparison to the OP, it's another image that with some subtle tweaks & coaxing can really take it up several notches. Depending on your ethics, removing some of the distracting vegetation to the LHS of the face might help, likewise on the body, however the later is only cosmetic IMHO.

Loi, nice composition/placement in the frame, great POV, good exposure control. Agree with Rachel, and Steve about pulling more out with some selective adjustments. Very nice image !!

Thank you all for your help. I haven't learned how to use layer masks yet, so I just applied the brush tool to lighten up the shadow areas around the eyes and under the snout. I also used the eye drop tool in DPP to check for WB on the nose area. I think the image looks less Red, cooler temp.

Question: Do you always check for WB? what happens when there is no natural grey area in the image? How would you check for WB?

    Thank you.

Personally I do as it can make some difference or at times, very little, however there is a way to find a Neutral grey, but to my knowledge you can only do this is PS as you need to create it, (I'll send it, as a few others have hit here to), although not sure about it in ACR? LR you can and I will show you in September.

The RP is better, but there is more detail you can extract which was evident in the OP. I would also selectively lower the exp, highlights and add some contrast/clarity for a bit more in the tusks, you don't want them looking to pristine, he's not going to the dentist.

    Hi Loi,
great image of these fantastic and interesting creatures.
Good details and sharpness where it counts.
Like the low POV and the comp.

RP looks a lot better , but i would try to give the colors a tad more life. Think you should try to push yourself to more PP exercise , to get the most out of your really good images...

This is nice - think you have the colours correct in the RP but lacks sparkle. Would try to saturate gently some of the yellows a little bit more but would leave the hog well alone. Think you have it now!
