I took this photo at a plant nursery, outdoors, overcast, 50mm f1.8 lens. The dark bg was the black canvas on which the flower pots were sitting. f4.5, 1/500 sec., ISO 200, handheld.
Processed in Elements 10: Used Topaz Detail twice, once on the whole image, and once on only the flower.

Anita, I think Topaz is a good choice for the image. I like the color contrast. My eye keeps being drawn to the out of focus large leaf in the background. I wonder if darkening it a bit would help.

Cheryl: Thanks for mentioning the distraction of the out of focus leaves. This is one of the things I appreciate about this forum--honest feedback that allows me to improve my photos. I tried darkening, but didn't like the result. Instead, I cloned out the back leaves using Denise and Arthur's cloning-with-layers approach. What do you think?

Hi Anita, wonderful composition and processing. Agree on the distraction and your idea on cloning those back leaves... did you intend to post a revised image?

Thanks! Yes, I did intend to post revised image. Thanks for the reminder. There is still an out of focus leaf, but it belongs to the stem shown in the image. Opinions?

I think it all depends on your purpose (vision) for this. Use of filters is excellent. Whether to clone or not re background leaves is your choice. I rather think the single stem is a bit too long on it s own. Tends to make me think the stem is the most important part. Maybe cropping it from the bottom a bit to make the flower more prominent? I can see arguments for both versions--

You make an excellent point about the stem being too long. I thought of that, but I like the part at the bottom. Maybe two versions are required. I'm going to crop the second image. And, in the OP, try blurring the back leaves even more.
Many thanks for your input. Very helpful!

Anita, I like the repost much better. I had thought the stem was too long in the OP but I like it now that it's a single stem.

Anita, add my vote for the repost - I think it works much better. I could also see cropping some of the stem away, but I like the balance of the bloom and the leaf in the corners, with the diagonal line of the stem holding them together.
