    Default Ammodramus day!

I couldn't believe this bird popped up on this driftwood--almost too good to be true!

    Nikon D800, Sigma 500, 1/500 @ f/5.6, ISO 500, flash, tripod. C&C welcomed and appreciated!

Congratulations on this image Joseph. It's very high quality. The subject is sharp and the BG is killer. Love the lighting too. There are a host of ways to crop this one but I like your choice which gives the subject lots of room to breathe. I have admit to viewing the image on my iPad so his comment may be way off, but it looks like you could push the contrast a bit further to give the image a bit more punch. Alternatively just bring down the blacks a little may work.

I think we're going to need somebody to break the tie with me and John, cause I think there's to much flash :)
I'm thinking somewhere between -.5 and -1 on the exposure compensation.

I would tend to crop vertical with the driftwood in the lower left hand corner and space on the right.

I'm afraid I would have to side with Doug on this one. The bird's breast and perch both look overpowered with flash. I'm also thinking a vertical crop/comp would look good.
Beautiful shot with very nice background!

Re the flash, that's where the suggested increase in contrast and / or blacks density would come in to save the day.

Am now looking at image on my studio display and agree that there's a bit too much flash. Tried a fix in Photoshop and about 5 sec of work with Levels did the trick.

Here's a repost with some quick perch and levels work.

Anyone have any thoughts on the re-work?

I think it does the job nicely Joseph. The adjustment has made the BG more saturated so I would consider toning down that part some.

HI joseph....I have to agree that the bird looks overexposed ( flashed ) to me> If I were you I would try to shoot with your flash off> I think the repost looks better but still think you should be getting much more detail in the feathers etc esp with that wonderful D-800 you have.
