    Default Mule Deer

The sun was just starting to break through the clouds after a rain shower. I was attracted to the light on the velvet of the growing antlers. So much so, that I unfortunately left way too little room at the feet. Photographed in the meadow outside my house at 8,000 ft.

Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS @185mm, 1/500, f6.3, exp.comp. -1/3, ISO 800. Hand held as I was walking with this boy as he fed on the bushes.

    c & c most appreciated.

Hi Nancy, nice sharp detail. My initial reaction to this image is it could be benefit from a vertical crop. IMO, the image is a bit over sharpened. The 70-200 is an amazing lens and with a close up shot, it is already very sharp. Loi

Hi Nancy, handsome subject in fresh velvet. I like the pose here as well. I agree with Loi on the merits of a vertical crop on this. I might be tempted to add just a bit of black to the red and neutral channels to help it pop. TFS

Hi Nancy, I too agree that getting so close was excellent and illustrates how comfortable the deer was with your presence.

Firstly I would drop the Blue cast, more noticeable in the nose & tree trunk in the BKG. If this is not FF, then I would suggest looking at a more rectangular format, putting the deer more to the LHS as an alternative, however going slightly wider (smaller in frame) may give more room below to help with the virtual legs too. I think you could also afford to drop the exposure, looks a little bright and as the EV was at -0/.33 I guess the sun was a little strong and by dropping the exposure the tone/depth of colour comes back a little more IMHO? It looks like you opened the ear up (lightened it) I would revert back to having a tad more shadow, although I really like the era pointing out giving that alert sense. Love the 'fresh velvet' on the antlers, as per Johns comment, cool.

Hi Nancy, lovely image you have here of the deer. I agree with the crop. My first thought when I have seen the images was the blue cast Steve mentioned, but I guess that is, as I always now look for blue in shadow

You got already great suggestions from Steve and the others.

    Have a great week

    Ciao Anette

Hi Nancy - Nice look at the deer and the new velvet. I like the slightly cocked head and alert look. Good suggestions about color and exp above and I also agree on the vertical crop. It would eliminate the prominent tree trunk as well.

LOvely image Nancy, well captured, I agree with the great advice steve has offered, i think he has covered it all. Otherwise the only other option maybe is to try a portrait crop just to experiment. Otherwise lovely image
