    Default Loon Season

I went up to the Adirondacks to get the 'chick on mommy's back' shot. No chicks :(
Though plenty of Loons ! Beautiful birds in breeding plumage.
1DMKIV, ISO 800, 420mm, F5.6, manual, right angle viewfinder from a kayak early in the morning.
    All C&C appreciated.

    Neil:

I am rather partial to loons, so always enjoy viewing them.

I like the low shooting angle, head position, drops on head.

I am not seeing much detail on the whites of the breast, and the water highlights in the foreground are rather distracting.

Interesting about using a right angle finder while in a kayak. I have enough trouble framing them with a right angle finder from my jon boat!

    Cheers

    Very nice shot.
Terrific low angle, great comp, I really like the head angle and the water drop on it's beak.
I also find the highlights in the water a tad distracting. Still a great shot.
    Well done.

Randy, I agree about the whites. This is a weak part of my " game". I tried googling how to bring out the whites, but nothing I tried worked. If you have any tips in this area I would appreciate it. Love your Loon work! The whites are not blown out by the way. I use LR and PS Elements 10 as well as the Nik suite.

    Neil:

re: white details - in Nik Color Efex Pro, the detail extractor tool will often give some apparent detail in whites that otherwise are featureless. Often takes just a little bit painted in on the whites only to give them a little detail. Give it a try.
