Loonscape - Common loon wing flap on foggy morning
This fellow was imaged last month in northern Michigan. There was light fog still on the water, the sun had come up just enough to catch the bird and some of the trees on the far shore.
I have a lot of standard loon shots, and am always looking for a different interpretation.
D4 600Vr f/4.5 1/3200s ISO 800 Pedestal mounted in the bottom of my little boat "Loonie Too"
Post: Cleaned up some specular highlights in background, sharpened bird.
In a perfect world, wish I had a been a few feet more to the left to provide slightly more separation from the bird and closest tree, but he was moving before the flap, I was moving my boat, so not easy sometimes to fine tune the comp.
This is really good.
I love the 3 trees in the BG against that great dark blue BG.Really like the layers in the BG as well.
Love the placement of the loon in the frame as well.
The head shake and droplets really add to the image.
I find myself wishing that the wings were more symmetrical ( minor minor nit). This would look awesome as a big print.
Well done and congrats on a stunning shot,
Gail
This is quite a unique and powerful image, Randy. The light was really your friend here. Amazing that you can even see the green neck band. Love the water droplets, the BG trees. Wish it were mine!
This is working really Randy. I would not mind the trees and shoreline a tad darker but you definitely rendered the mood beautifully here. Super nice, and yes, different!
I like the low angle, setting and loose composition. I find the faint white line at the bottom left of the frame catches my eye. Still a beauty as presented!

Hi Randy, excellent detail on the Loon, and I like the flying droplets from the head shake. Shooting from your boat really creates a cool low perspective, and great that we can make out the shape of the trees in the distant BG. At first, I thought a central placement would work better, but looking at this time and time again, you have actually nailed this. A fine image Randy.
