    A critically endangered Black Rhino.
Photo taken after sunset (see the settings below!), he'd kicked up some dust which created some nice mood.

    Hey Morkel,
i think really got image for the techs ...!!!!!!
i think it reflects the situation of the day really nice , with good tones and beautiful colors.
    great pose of the rhino.
good job on bringing out the details in the subject, thinking about the conditions when you have taken the shot.

only two suggestions - remove that piece of dung in LLC and maybe try to reduce a little of magenta in the rhino itself , looks a bit too heavy to my eyes, maybe it is just me.

    tripod ? or handhold ?

Dear Morkel-this is one stunning image and I love it just the way it is. The rhino really stands out against the BG and the light is beautiful. I thought long and hard about removing the dung, be in in the corner or otherwise- yet I find that it does not bother or distract me at all. If anything, it gives depth to the image. Not to mention the subject seems to be standing in a dung midden and thus a bit of dung here and there makes sense to me somehow...Looking at your settings, I think you've done a marvelous job - the rhino is nice and sharp and there's a warmth and a luminous energy behind the rhino with the last rays of sun filtering through the dust. Love the harmony and also the proportion-great crop!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Excellent capture! Love the way there is the red hue on the Rhino blending with the BG.

Hi Morkel, love the stance and the jaunty head angle. The orange/red hue to the overall setting adds a nice warmth to the image and the plumes of dust gives interest to the image. I would suggest a Curves adjustment to open up the face & horn a bit more, likewise adding some more USM on the face/horn, I think it can take it. Difficult to know on the laptop, but a slight addition of a darker Curves adjustment brings a bit more form/definition to the side of the body.

Always good to see a Rhino.

Hi Morkel - I like the comp and late day tones to this. Cocked head and dust add greatly to the image. I agree on a touch more sharpening to the head. Dung doesn't bother me and I know your stance on cloning.

    Rachel

Great shot!! Amazing you were standing in front of such an endangered species.

As mentioned above, really pushing the limit with those techs. Was the rhino moving about or static with that head position?

Final question, are you using the D3S over the D800 because of a better low light capability or some other reason?

    Thanks for the kind comments.
Steve, will play around some more!

Shane - I use both all the time but tend to prefer the 500 on the D3s for action and very low light like here. D800 is no slouch at high ISO but D3s is cleaner. At this scene I shot with the D800+70-200 as well, might post a photo sometime later shot with that combo too.

Hi Morkel, love this image the way it is, dung or not, it is just part of the environment to me. You did a great job with the light given that this was shot after sunset. The head is pretty sharp at 1/60 SS. Love to see a RP based upon Steve's suggestion. Loi

    Thanks Loi

For the record - the majority of the dung here is elephant dung!
