    Default Pronghorn buck

While driving through sage brush at 9,000 ft in Colorado, I was lucky to come upon this Pronghorn buck close to the road. I did see several females with young but they kept their distance. The sun was passing in and out of clouds and I had the cloud cover on my side for this image. The flowers associated with the sage brush are in beautiful bloom and add a nice bit of color to an otherwise gray-green habitat. The Pronghorn appears a bit scruffy and must still be shedding.

I used the car for a blind and camera support. Canon 1DMarkIV, Canon 400 f4 DO IS lens, 1/400, f9, exp comp -1/3, ISO 400

    C & C most appreciated.

Hi Nancy - the habitat is certainly nice with the bits of color adding. I don't mind the head down, eating pose since the buck's head is angled toward you nicely. It appears that the blacks of the face are a bit choked and the whites on the face also lacking detail. I'm not sure if it is this way in the RAW or if it is the result of pp adjustments. The body has more detail though I would still open up the midtones slightly.

    Hi Nancy ,

agree with Rachel`s statements .would like to say that i think you can remove magenta from the darker areas in the BG , but look for that little flowers ....

like the overall coloration , very nice . like the clarity and sharpness in the subject.

Rachael & Andreas, thank you for the good suggestions. I reprocessed the image, paying particular attention to the blacks & whites, as well as the other colors. I believe I used a lighter hand for this image.

I like the setting very much here, Nancy.
Good repost to incorporate suggestions given. I might even dodge the face a wee bit more?
Is it just me or may it need a slight shift away from magenta in overall colour balance?

Hi Nancy, I will leave it for others to debate about any colour shift, however for me I would combine the two for the final image. Background from the OP, subject from the RP. Easy to do, drag & drop, then mask. Personally I would have preferred the head more in the 'up right' position, or waited until the nose was clear of any objects.

Thank Morkel & Steve for your comments. Steve, I'll try as you suggest merging the 2 images. I do have other images with the head up, but I like the way the head down made you notice the small, bright flowers. Morkel, it is tough for me to see the color shift but since Andreas also mentions it, I'll work on it.

Hi Gail. I think the third image is the best of the three. IMO a little more contrast might tone down the light image but a nice capture "on the run" anyway!

  10. Thanks Nancy Bell thanked for this post
