Trying out a combo this morning I am taking on a Whale watching tour next week.
The IQ is not quite what the 300 prime is, but I need the Zoom and the light weight
    on a small boat.

    1/2500, iso1000, f6.3, 400mm (70-200 f2.8 w/ 2x tc) D800, HH

    Dan:

I am not sure the title is quite accurate. Looks more like stub twitching to me ! It is amazing how those tiny wings develop into full size, working units so quickly.

The comp works well for the pose, well exposed in general except for a very small white patch at the water line far right.

Brad Hill has had some interesting things to say during the testing of the new 80-400 compared with the other alternatives. For some reason, the 70-200 VRII he used with the 2.0 TC III was not a happy camper. It did quite well with the 70-200 f/4 however.

I try and get a link for you in a minute.

    Cheers

    Randy

Here it is:http://www.naturalart.ca/voice/blog.html its in the section about the 80-400 testing, near the top.

    Thanks for the link Randy.
The images with the 70-200 and 2x are plenty sharp, the bokeh is not great and you get some aberrations.
It works very well with the 1.7 tc which I will probably use.
I used this combo when I started out in Bird photography with a D7000.
Not great, better with the D800 but still not great.
I will go for less distance (340 vs. 400) and hope we get close to some Orca's.
As an all around lens, The 70-200 used alone is my favorite lens and I think is the best Nikon makes.

    Dan:

With the large files you have to work with from the D800, and subsequent croppability, I agree using the 1.7 TC may be a better choice.

I know that when I have used that TC, I had to do a fair amount of fine tuning on the camera, and tried to shoot around f/10 for max. acuity.

    Cheers
