I like the jay but I hate the background I have submitted it to see if anyone can suggest an improvement. I have brushed it and desaturated it but it looks yagh to me.

    Jon:

I like the crouched pose of the jay. If you want to post the original without any background work, we might be able to offer some thoughts.

    Cheers

Interesting pose. Only ever seen one and that was in Germany. Lovely bird.

Nice BG work! (And bird!) If it were mine I'd try to tone down the darkest area. Could be tricky working around the bird but it's so sharp you could probably isolate it well.

I love Topaz ReMask for isolating objects. There is a great tutorial on their web site (hope it's still there). It's easy to use once you know how to make the basic mask and then refine it. It's the ability to refine that makes it so good.

This is the kind of image I rather like with a great expression on the face, obviously keeping a keen eye on something above. Focus/detail/exposure is excellent...love the clear eye. The branch does look like a set up I thinkbut I dont think the edited backdrop is really that bad, the only thing that really detracts is the darker area directly above the back. Personally I would prefer to see a more natural backdrop anytime than a highly PS'd version that looks too sterile.

    Wow Jon,

That is some nice work on the bg you did there. I like the pose of the jay, but not sure if it's a favorite for me.

As mentioned above, see if you can brighten the darker areas in the bg.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I will have to have a look at the darker area and Topaz ReMask. The set up was in a friend's garden, not mine.

    Jon:

Nice save on this one. Not sure I have to patience to do such a major clean up.

You will have to talk to your friend about perch selection!

    Cheers
