Lovely singing pose Bill, beautiful looking little bird. I keep thinking it needs more room at the top though, or less on the bottom, but chopping off some leaves would spoil as well.....so, all in all a god choice of crop/composition

    WOW Bill.
    I just love this one.
Terrific perch with no leaves cut off, great BG, awesome singing pose with perfect HA.
Light is nice and the eye is so well visualized.
No nits from me at all,
    Gail

This a great species and a very nice image, Bill. I haven't had a presentable image of this species up until this year.

    Lovely photo, Bill.
I think a vertical with a some more above if you have it, would look nice.

Beautifully done Bill. I'd also like to see a version as a vertical if you've got it.

superb image! good details, excellent comp with singing pose on a beautiful perch & BG.
just a small query - was the BG off the camera or was it blurred in PP?

Beautiful calling pose and beautifully rendered. Like it from top to bottom. I could see a vertical too. One of the best I have scene of this species in a while. Nice...

Thanks Girish. As hard as I tried, I couldn't get him to perch far enough away from the BG foliage for an in-camera OOF background, so I did apply some negative contrast and some blur to the BG in PP.

Thanks everyone. As to the crop: I did look at a vertical. The problem is that I have no more room at the bottom, without attempting to clone the leaf stem into added canvas. Without adding room beneath, a vertical comp just didn't look right to me. Even with an 8x10 proportion (which I don't like anyway), and without cropping the RH leaves, the bird's head would be barely more than halfway up the frame, making it look like more space below was needed.

Nice beautiful shot! I think the rule of thirds might work better for composition.

A nice idea in principle. I often try to put the bird's eye at an ROT point, when it works. The only way I could see to do that here would be either to go vertically and crop off some of the leaves on the right, or stay horizontal, expand canvas considerably on right and top, and make the bird much smaller in the frame. There may be other ways. What did you have in mind?

I was not necessarily thinking at but more the vertical rule of thirds line on the left (English is not my native language, I hope you understand what I mean). I did a very quick edit in LR, I personally like it a bit better, but this is already a terrific image and it comes down to taste. If you want me to delete the image, I will right away.

Thank you Laurent. No need to delete. You make a good point. I personally don't like cutting off the bottom leaf, but the OP might be improved by simply moving the bird slightly to the left, even if it doesn't reach the 1/3 line. Thanks for the suggestion.

I totally agree, it would probably be better if you don't cut the leaf and add a little canvas on top. If you move the bird up to make sure not to cut the leaf without adding canvas, you get too little headroom in my opinion. (or just changing the aspect ratio slightly of course, since this is a crop)
