The adults had their work cut out for them with the high winds and blowing sand , last night. Protecting the young was not an easy task. Some of the chicks are so small , they could blow away. Tough shooting conditions , but nice light the last 1/2 hour.

    Such a cute image Joe
I like the way you included the green grass on a white sand beach
    Exposure looks nice
In case you have more on left i may reduce the grass a bit and add the white beach to the frame, may be more nice IMO
i like the concept in this image

It is a nice image Joe, I like it.
I see some thin white line around the head of the adult bird which is somewhat distracting and can easily be dealt with.

I love the composition here! And I never thought about a chick blowing away! What an awful thought, but it makes sense as a real hazard -- they must not weigh much.

If you could tell me why I get this line , I would be very thankfull. I seem to get it often , and don't know why.

They could get blown away very quickly. I have seen it happen in the past. The Skimmers and Terns nest in the same area , and if a Tern chick blows or wanders into the Skimmer area , the Skimmers will kill it.

The white line could be an artifact from sharpening. A lower Radius will make it less prominent, but "sharpening" is really just the introduction of artifacts that increase contrast at edges, making things look sharper.

It could possibly become more accentuated in conversion to JPEG.

If nothing else works, I resort to cloning out the line -- very carefully at very high magnification.

Sweet. I just love the diagonal lines of the composition. The green really makes it; don't change it. Beautiful light. I also get that halo when sharpening an image where there is a lot of contrast, as here between the black head and white sand. Sometimes I can mitigate it by using the eraser at 30 or 40% on the sharpening layer, right around the offending line, but it's tough to make it go away completely. Is your camera set to do any in-camera sharpening?

In-camera settings such as sharpening and color space (sRGB or Adobe RGB) won't affect RAW files, at least in ACR and LR. (White Balance will be recognized) Not sure about the Nikon converter or Canon's DPP -- sharpening settings might come in but could be reduced non-destructively. If you're shooting JPEG, in-camera settings are baked into the file.

You can also create a mask on the sharpening layer and erase with a black brush. Then if you make a mistake you can un-erase with a white brush. An eraser tool on steroids.

A lovely image Joe, the grass really sets it off, a quick way to fix the sharpening halo's to use the history brush tool, a small brush just covering the halo, set to the step before the sharpening.

WOW - a big wow. One of the better bird images I have seen in a while. I just love the space you included here. The light and the poses are to die for as well. top notch.
