    Default Colorful La Jolla Pelican

La Jolla is a small city on the coast of San Diego, California that Brown Pelicans congregate during the breeding season. This is a mature male. Not sure why some males have white necks and some have black ones.
I took this on New Years day 2013 in the early morning light.

Thanks as always for looking and for your input. Appreciated

I can see why you took this David, the early morning light is beautiful!. Sharp focus and well exposed. The only thing that would make this shot even better IMO is for the bill to be in front catching the same fantastic light. But as we all know a lot of luck will dictate the composition. Great shot!

Certa9inly is a colorful species David, extroadinary detail coming through and yes, the nearly morning light is extra good. Dont mind the tight frame comp, but a little m0re canvas on the left I think would improve ever so slightly. Is this the only none you took of him, I like the big stretch preening captured, but i bet one showing more bill would also be a treat for the eye....great image David, candy for the eye

Beautiful light and sweet color on the bird. Maybe just a bit more room on the left.

Thanks everyone for the comments, appreciated.

Phil, No its not the only pic I took. I spent all morning taking pics of this guy and many others. I will post some others with the bill and pouch extended soon. Thanks.

You captured him in sublime light and it's fun to see him in this scratching pose. Very nice details and colors.

Hi David, your spoonies are a lovely rosette colour, your pelicans have a variety of colours, as above, and both our spoonies and pelicans are drab white.

Great behavioural capture, good DOF, sharp, and yes those colours shine in the early morning light. An opportunity well used to have started off the new year.

The IQ, light and colors make this a winner in my books.
I like the preening pose- makes for something a bit different.

The light quality, subject pose, colors, and sharpness are all excellent.
The composition feels cramped to me, but I can see that the framing is obvious so....
Love the plumage colors on this bird.
