    Default Mourning Dove

Mourning dove on my back deck, several of these guys like to roost behind the house due to multiple bird feeders.

Nice IQ and I like the composition, but the color on the BG competes -- what would you think about toning it down?

I've been trying to shoot some doves at my house; they graze on the deck on food spilled from feeders but I can't figure how to get them off the ground and onto a photogenic branch or stump. I love to hear their calls.

Thanks Diane! Not real sure what IQ means but I'll take it lol. As for the background, should I try to mask the dove in CS and then bring some of the colors down in the back?

Nice pose and colors of the dove. I agree with Diane about the background. IQ is the "image quality", so yes, take it. :) I would also do some noise reduction on the background. Here's a quick edit in CS6. I selected the dove and perch, inverted it on a layer, ran Topaz Dnoise, desaturated and lightened it. Looks better to me, but see what you think.

    Bob,
I definitely like the re-post that Jeannean has done. The background now doesn't compete with the dove for the viewer's attention. This is a nice shot of a bird we almost hate here in Arizona. They are nothing more than pests that keep the other birds away from the feeders. We've even had to resort to "dove proofing" many of the feeders to keep them away!

The repost doesn't deal with the underexposure, high contrast and oversaturation of the BG and overexposure and low contrast of the bird. Here's a quick (2 minute) approximation of what I would do.

Desaturate and darken green and yellows; select the bird with a quick mask or Quick selection tool and darken and increase contrast (Curves). Both done as adjustment layers. That wasn't quite enough so I went to the BG layer and did a Shadows-Highlights on it.

Now the bird stands out against the BG instead of being overpowered by it.
