    Default A scene from Nebrownii

Another super-bright afternoon in Etosha. Of all the times that I visited this waterhole, these "clay" mammoths were present. Seemed to be quite the spot for harassing the zebras, watersports, and makeovers

I've experimented with my PP for the tones on this one and decided to do the monochrome; would like to hear what everyone thinks!

    Canon 5D II, 24-105mm @ 47mm, f/7.1, @ 1/1000s, ISO 250, EC +1/3

    Comments welcome!

P.S. - I'm realizing that the image IQ reduces after uploading here, even though am following the "web upload" method. Would appreciate any troubleshooting tips. Thanks!

Nice image , inclusion of the great sky adds a lot of character to the image so do the formation of the rays
i may like the elephants to be a bit darker than this may look more punchy to my eye, however not sure of the real view
    interesting image over all

    Hi Shreyas

I think Vishal is right on the brightness of ellies. The rays do make it special. IMHO I would crop bit on LHS. Looks like there are some artifacts present above the split in the group. Top LHC dark sky needs to be addressed.
Love the feeling of vastness, these giants look small in the vast landscape.
Do you resharpen after resizing before saving for web?
    Stunning image

I like it. Not your everyday ellie scene. How about a little darker on the sky and maybe a bit of a vignette to focus attention on the animals.

Hi Shreyas - the sky looks great with the clouds and the rays coming down but I agree that the coloring/toning of the elephants isn't really working. I wish more of the elephants were facing toward you than away. I know there was probably no way to avoid it but I also think that all the elephants intersecting the dominant elephant in the fg are a problem. Preferably, the one in the fg would be in the clear.

    Rachel

Hi Shreyas, an interesting image and if you like stuff like this checkout Peter D's website, his elephants from Etosha are awesome!!!

I quite like the B/W route, but feel it needs some more tonal range in there to add depth and give more detail the the brighter subjects. With a herd like this it's difficult to orchestrate them into position and so you need to wait until things are right, if possible and again, I know Peter has spent hours just doing that, but the end result is spot on. The wider approach to the image certainly conveys the harsh, baron landscape these animals inhabit.

I will try and add some thoughts to your dilemma and drop you a line over the next few days.

I think this is stunning. I might back off on the whites a little so that the elephants aren't so aggressively pale, but I love the contrasty sky and the sense of desolation. Of course, there are many ways in which the elephants could have been better arranged in the shot, but that's always the case with a herd of elephants and particularly with so many in the scene.
Would also crop off the very left hand edge where there are some distracting blobs right at the side.

Having spent some time with herds of elephant milling about recently, I can understand how tricky it is to get them all to pose photogenically.
For me, the scene/comp/mood works but the conversion can be improved on. I used some selective dodging and burning in this repost, what do you think Shreyas?

I like what Morkel has done with this but I also like the original post so maybe try something in the middle.

    Hello all,
Thank you for your comments and suggestions. So the general consensus is that the elephants need more contrast and details.
Am busy with an event right now (also read: slacker ) I'll work up a repost next week. My instinct is going with Jamie, i.e. a middle path between OP and Morkel's version....so we'll see!

    Bests
