    Default An Alert Black Bear

A Vancouver Island Black Bear alert on the foreshore.

I have surfaced again, doesn't happen often these days but after spending the day at a Thomas the Tank Engine steam train kids event my wife Janice (that sounds like I have more than one wife but I don't) let me go visit the local camera shop to put a long lasting dilemma to rest. All I'll say is the decision finally happened and thankfully camera lenses don't depreciate like cars do .

Here is something from my archives. I got thinking about bears on the drive home and decided to dig into the archives this evening.

    Behind the camera: Canon 1d Mark IV | 200mm| F4 | 1/500 | ISO1600 | Beanbag mounted on side of 6 man zodiac.

Behind the computer: RAW file converted in LR4 into three different exposures. Imported into PS6 and combined to one image using layers. Additional curve, colour, USM sharpening and NR adjustments done in PS.

    Cheers

Great news Jamie, I couldn't take anymore scenario's on this and the right move too IMHO.

I like the image as it has space and includes the environment/habitat, key IMHO for bears like this. Good call on the PP. Did you lighten the bear, if so I might just drop it a fraction, likewise I think a slight adjustment on the FG third of the rocks would help, exposure/contrast perhaps? Is that water creeping in at the foot of the image, might be nice to have a bit more if you have it?

    Hope to see more.

Hi Jamie - I'm guessing I know which way you resolved your dilemma and I'm looking forward to seeing images with it. The bear gave you a nice pose and I like the comp. Nice job on the pp.

    Thanks Steve and Rachelle.

Steve, I blended three exposures, first was left at 0 comp, the second approx -1/3 and the last -1 stop so I could get a much depth and detail from the scene and bear. Sadly there isn't enough water in the FG to really bring that much more into frame without then upsetting the rest of the composition. The bear was a little too centered on the original comp. As for the FG rocks, I'll go see what I can do with them this evening and yes the bear was lightened a touch so I'll play with darkening it in the PSD file.

    Cheers for the comments.

As for lens, I did take a while to decide I agree and likely drove a few folks mental with my prolonged decision making so thanks for flying half way around the world to let me try out yours :)))

Great to see you posting, Jamie! Since it seems I'm not in the "inner circle" regarding your camera shop visit, why not tell us what you purchased/ordered? 200-400mm?
I like the overall scene and you handled the low light well. Can't make a call on the look of the bear (not viewing on the best monitor)...but I would say I'd also like to see some more below and perhaps shift the bear slightly towards our LHS given the pose?

Lovely image all around, really like the inclusion of some of the environment, otherwise all looks good to me.
