Default Setting 580 EXII ETTL for 40D

I want to set the 580 so that it will provide fill flash in AV or TV mode without dictating a predefined shutter speed.

So I cycled through the Mode button, but it doesnt display ETTL, just TTL or M or Multi.

So I looked around the web, and I found this for configuring the settings from the 40 D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUIE7LZ_rcg Cool!

But when I select Flash Control->External Flash Func Setting, it says, "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off." Not cool.

Any help on how I can do this, in the 40D or in the 580, please?

I may not have understood the question, but did you get High Speed Synch?
That used to do it for me, it should be in the other button, the one that looks like a little arrow.

When I press the High Speed Synch button, it doesn't display the HSS icon, just the icon of 3 "tirangles" pointing to the right.

You need to press a few times, it rotates between HSS, second curtain and something elses I can't remember.
I never used the 40D, so maybe the camera needs to be set like my Nikons?

You're on exactly the right point, but no matter how many times I press it, it just goes from Second Curtain to blank, never High Speed.

Lance are you setting this on camera with the camera on or off?

I think the flash has to be mounted on a powered camera to access some fuctions.

I can tell you tomorrow after I check it on a 40D and 580....

Robert, I tried it on and off the camera, and also on an XTi...no good.

I'm sending it to Canon for repair.

Fabs and Robert - Thank You!

    Hi,

Slightly off topic, but would someone mind telling me how I can toggle in and out of the "M Zoom" mode on the 580 MkII. Mine seems to be stuck and I can't find anything in the "User Guide" that explains. So, one of us is woefully inadequate:confused:.

    Thanks,

    Gerald

    Gerald,

I was having the same problem recently. Hope I explain this correctly. Press the button that starts the "Zoom" to blinking. Keep turning the selection wheel and it will go back to auto when you reach and continue past the last (widest) zoom setting. Seems like turning to the left will get you back to auto.

Hope this is clear and correct.

    Good luck - dave b.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for your suggestion, but it didn't solve my problem. However, my very friendly dealer spotted the problem straight away - seems I am not the first! I had inadvertently taken out the "Wide Panel" and not pushed it fully back into the head - so the sytem was locked into MZoom at 14mm. All it took was a gentle push of the Wide Panel and everything was as it should be! Nice trap for "young" players!

    Gerald
