Bob,

Love the terns looks like the light was not cooperating here...consider flash or repositioning your lens....as I always say, "we don't shoot the subject we shoot the light".

Bob, You should be able to open up the black area and the grey areas separately. Might not be easy to get the eye visible as it is the same dark color. bird is sharp.
