I recently returned from a wonderful trip to the coast of Delaware and Long Island, viewing and photographing shorebirds. The American Oystercatchers were courting and establishing pair bonds that would bind them together for the hard work of raising a chick. We like to call this commitment love, but who knows what the birds think.

I used a layer of fractalius and then Topaz, Simplify 4, underpainting.

Nancy, I love the understated (underpainted) look to this one. It looks like they could be in a sandstorm or snowstorm or fog - lots of interpretations to play with. But I think it emphasizes the often harsh conditions that birds so readily adapt to. It's a perfect amount of Fractalius. There's something a little funky going on with the near OC's legs?

Cheryl, I noticed that about the legs after I posted it. Not sure what that is.

I really like the look and feel of this image. Love the soft, diffuse lighting and the undersaturated look. Very nice. I think it's just a "whole lotta legs" goin' on.

Great image Nancy, like the "frosty" feel of the atmosphere, regarding the legs-I think it might be that the bird at the back was stretching? Nevertheless- I love this, enjoyed viewing, thank you for this post!

    Kind regards,
