OK ----no big deal with the egret but I was transfixed by the repeating patterns on the water and could not resist. Increased the contrast on just the bg in post. Any ideas about how to tone down the strong highlights on the egret!

Hi Bob, I agree - the water is mesmerizing. I like shots like this with some environment shown. If you have canvas, I would suggest cropping so the bird is not so centered vertically, probably moving the bird down in the frame. As for the highlights, you could try selecting them (select | color range | highlights), making a new layer with the selection (control J or command J on Macs) then setting the layer mode to "multiply". You can then use the opacity slider to control how much effect the layer contributes to the image.

I like what you saw here, and a good one to try some tweaks.

It looks like it needs a slight ccw rotation, or possibly some slight distortion, to keep the ripples horizontal. Even if they were viewed at an angle, the eye wants a correction as would be done with a view camera -- so easy with the digital darkroom.

Was the original a raw capture? If so it should be easy to go back to the conversion for the best control of the highlights. The tools and control are amazing.

    Bob,..

    Man..I love this picture!!!!

This is unique and different...what a great eye! I agree with the rotation to square things up and Kerry's advice on adjusting the whites. I have seem folks use the clone tool and tone down blown areas as well. I really like what you are trying to do here..consider moving the subject up in the left hand corner, leveling the frame and making tweaks to the hot pixels...I really like this one. What a great shot depicting the beauty in nature...thanks to you I am there.
