    Default Cedar Waxwing

I came across a flock of these guys while walking along a wooded trail in a local refuge the other day. Their feathers are so silky smooth that it's tough to get any detail. The lighting helped here, and I tried coaxing out a bit with Nik DE. Was also glad to get a pose that showed his signature markings. I initially tried a looser horizontal crop before deciding on this portrait comp. See next pane.

Here's the horizontal. I'm curious to know which one you like better.

Bill both look fantastic, however i may have a bias as i love this bird a lot, never seen it but i just like it a lot along with the Cardinal
You perch is fantastic and the bird is in a great pose with good HA, i am tempted to go with the horizontal composition more. The subtle red and the yellow on the wings is so nicely nailed, love it

I like the horizontal as it's less clinical. The look back pose is great.

Both work nicely, having to choose one it would be the horizontal one. Lovely head turn, stunning colours well done.

Add me to the horizontal camp, although when I opened the thread, I thought the vertical was just splendid. You captured this bird to show off all it's beauty. Excellent!

To me both versions are great and for a moment I was thinking that vert. was my favorite but after a close look, the horizontal version is my favorite, is simple but, the OOF leaves on the URC makes this one for me. Very lovely species by the way. Canīt ask for a perch with more character.

Horizontal for me Bill. The OOF leaves on the right hand side balances the bird and perch. Lovely bird and perch, BG. Great image. I see a little bit of noise on the dark feather. Did you apply any NR? Loi

This is a beautiful bird photographed equally well. Like the pale green background making the bird standout in the picture. The Horizontal would be my choice as well.

superb image! excellent IQ, HA & colors. +1 for the horizontal version as the OOF leaves adds balance to the image.

Really nice Bill. The head turn is great and I love the lichens on the perch. I prefer the horizontal. Original feels a little tight and the horizontal has a great bg with the framing oof leaves

Horizontal for me too, by quite a margin. Fantastic image with a perfect head turn, you should be happy with this one!

    Bill,

This is a beautiful bird to see and photograph, and I feel you may have captured one of the best angles displaying all the feather colors. Love all the detail and the lichen covered perch. Prefer horizontal.

Thanks Loi. I didn't apply NR to the bird, but I did use Nik Detail Extractor. I haven't yet gotten very familiar with that plug-in, and I think I should have backed off by one point. If I remember correctly I used 4 points (percent?) of DE, and should have gone with 3.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the comments. Yes, Daniel, I was happy when I saw this one. Horizontal seems to be the unanimous choice.

Very nice, Bill. I really like the character in the perch and the back view. Horizontal crop is my preference. Fine job.

My word the horizontal is a fantastic cedar waxwing image. I enjoy the technical aspects, but the
aesthetics really draw me in. Excellent adult plumage on this bird too. Congrats!
