Default Teddy Bear in a Tree

Or at least his ears looked like a teddy bear to me. This Great Horned Owlet was probably photographed by 1000 folks at the recent Magee Marsh festival. I wish I had been able to stick around for another week or two to get images of fledging and parent interaction, but alas, had to leave.

Very nice Bill. Lovely owl and details. I wonder if a vertical crop might make a stronger image here since I see a lot of tree trunk on the LHS. Well done. Loi

Thanks, Loi. I did try a vertical crop first, in fact. It did feature the owlet better, but I felt it lost the context of the owl in the tree cavity.

Bill, loved the owl. really cute. Did you try some with smaller aperture? I think sharper FG will make this better.

I agree, Kaustubh. The lighting was tough, thus the ISO 2000. Perhaps I could have traded a little SS for more DOF.

This particular image isn't working for me, Bill, b/c just want to see more of the environment. The owl is sharp and well exposed, but I am yearning for more story.

I kinda agree with Marina. The owl is sharp but I dont see enough of it and the oof FG makes it noticable, might be because its late. Techs look great.

Bill, i like the idea of keeping the full trunk in the image makes sense to me as to how big the nest cavity is
the eyes of the owl add a lot of interest to me

I really like how the owlet is looking through tree.
Excellent IQ and love those big yellow eyes.
    Well done.

Bill, I initially thought that the owl was a little dark but after further review it really looks pretty good. I have looked at removing all of the blue on the right side, I think that looks pretty good.
