When they have young the thrashers will come occasionally to the setup for seeds. These birds are great mimics sounding a lot like mockingbirds. D800, 300mm, 2X tc, tripod. 1/250, f7.1, iso 1000. Cropped in acr, exp adjustment. USM in CS6. Deleted this jpeg three times trying to get the sharpening right. The head is not in the same plane of focus as the rest of the body. I think it looks ok now. I have no room on the left.
Great bird, perch and background. I can appreciate the difficulty about the focal plane, but to me it looks like you got it right in this version. I might be tempted to stretch the LH to add just a slivver of canvas, but very handsome as posted. I've read that these guys actually have a much larger repertoire than mockingbirds.
Jack, I think your sharpening is fine. Along with DOF, there could be some motion in the head that 1/250 might not have frozen. Loved the pose. I have seen them many times but never have had any success in taking a good shot. Well done.
Jack, I can tell you sharpened the head more, but looks fine to me.
It is on the edge but does not look over sharpened.
I love that perch you use.
I also like the small flower, I would add more if you have them.
I like the pose, perch and the detail in this shot. I can see the head sharpening but agree with Dan, looks good. Great looking eye that almost blends with the nice Bg. Well done.
Nice image here
the super BG sets up the lovely bird and the perch, i like the idea of keeping the small flower/ grass in the right of the frame adds to the frame
Bird is nicely exposed and details look good
Magnificent image.Beautiful colors,interesting perch,thought little big,nice lights,nice pose and beautiful green BG.Nice composition too.Agree about some space on LHS.Regards,Satish.
I like this photograph very much. The crop is perfect and I am glad you kept the little flower, somehow it gives equilibrium to this image. In my humble opinion, the bird does not need further sharpening-how about playing with contrast or levels a bit? And that's a awesome perch, by the way!
Very cool image of this species. Great soft light quality, colors, details, whimsical little grass in the LRC is
sweet! In northern Minnesota, I find this species to usually be shy and retiring at ground level...the tentative
crouched pose of the bird, fits that concept well.
