    Default Okavango Cheetah Cub

    Attached Images Attached Images

Cheetah cub taken in the Okavango.

Basic lightroom adjustments, plus color correction in CS6.

Toned down the sky, though struggled a little due the clouds all being mixed in.

    Techs:

    1D IV
    70-200 @ 70mm
    1/1600 @ F3.2
    ISO 400

(Should have stopped down a bit, though don't mind the shallow DOF)

Hi Russell - The low pov leads me to believe that you were on foot (or actually on the ground). I'm curious to know where in the Okavango is this permitted? The inquisitive look of the cheetah is great. The highlights remain a problem for me, including on the cheetah's face. I might try a luminosity mask. The sky is a problem as there are yellowish patches coming through. Also the one brighter stroke for lack of a better word right next to the face draws the eye. It's worth trying to rework the image a bit more.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Russell excellent image, great POV and love the inquisitiveness of this cub.

I do think the image is a little washed out in depth of colour & tonally, plus there seems to be a bit of fringing (magenta/cyan) in the fur at the shoulder blade/neck. Certainly adding a luminosity mask, Mid tone adjustment, a little bit of Curves and dropping some yellow out of the whites does help. If you are happy then applying a brush to even out the sky also makes a difference too. Difficult to tell on the DOF on this one Russell, but looks OK.

Thanks Steve and Rachel for the feedback - have pulled myself away painting the nusery and listening to Arsenal to put through a few tweaks.

@ Rachel - Yes, I was on foot, as I only normally visit parks/private concessions where this is possible. This image was taken in a private concession in the Okavango, which actually make up 60% of wildlife area. These areas are used for a range of activities, inlcuding Horse back safaris, elephant back safaris, walking safaris, hunting (soon to stop) and normal game drives. At Kwando where this was taken, you can offroad and be on foot. The only private concession where you are restricted is Mombo, as it falls within Moremi Game reserve (effectively a national park) following the extension of its boundaries in the mid 1990s.

Great low perspective. I like the raised paw and the lowered head and look from the subject really brings the viewer into the image.

Thanks Russell, good to know. I've only been to Chief's Camp in the Okavango which is also in Moremi so we were able to off-road but not the other stuff.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

    Hi Russell
like the low perspective and the DOF.
I am happy with the OP maybe toning down the highlights a tad, to give more depth in the cheetah.
The sky in RP looks a bit boring , compared to OP.
RP is too flat in the shadows for my taste.

Hi Russell, I as well like the low perspective very much. All is said already above.
Great image, RP is much better.

    Have a great day

Awesome perspective and the look into the eyes is great. I could still use much more tonal depth to my eyes, I would run lumo masks for the lights, burning it with about 20%.

I wasn't aware that you are allowed out from a game vehicle if not on a specific walking safari in these regions, thanks for expanding on that. Where was the mother at this stage and how did the cub react to being so close to you?
