Shot on my first-ever trip to High Island, Texas. I have lived in Houston 58 years, but having no interest in bird photography, had never heard about High Island (for birding). About 7 months ago I decided to give bird photography a try and soon learned about these sanctuaries. It has been a fun spring season and have learned a lot. CC welcome

    A note of interest:

I met three very serious birders at High Island this week that rode bicycles down from the Yukon. They have been on the road 10 months. They rode to San Diego and then to Florida where they rode a loop around it. They are NOT traveling with support team. There next planned stop is the lower Texas coast and then on to Big Bend NP where they will end their 1-year tour. They have other arrangements for returning to the Yukon. The three riders are: a woman - her son - a girl that may be her daughter - I'm not sure. The son and girl are about college freshman age.

    Their website is: birdyear.com

I like the perch a lot, in spite of all the branches. Pose is nice too. I wish the head were turned slightly towards the viewer, and I would like to see a little more room for the bird in the frame. The sky seems a little grainy.

    Hi David,
I like the composition and bird placement... I know that sometimes these guys are hard to get in a clear background, also understand that it show habitat; but for my taste, the branches touching the bird takes away from your image. I would clone them out. Again, aware that its alot of work, but it will look better. If not, well, next capture...:D There is a blown out section on the bird thats cooked...

High Island is a wonderful location, but as noted, the backgrounds can be challenging.

If you haven't already discovered it, be sure to check out Brazos Bend State Park for bird photography.
