    Default Tern in Flight

Captured this at Bombay Hook Refuge in De. Flocks of these guys were soaring and diving in a strong wind that made them hover and a slower shutter possible.I couldn't resist!

    Bob,

Love the light and flight position. The opportunity here is the eye, as I am sure you know. Nice detail for HHing 500 and 1.7 and the muted background is really nice. A will lit eye pushes this to the next level; still a nice photograph with a great feel. Nice one, thanks for sharing.

Hi Bob, nice capture of this tricky bird. It is a treat when you have wind conditions like that, as these birds are almost as hard to capture as the swallows! I like the look of the light coming from behind the wing, but the underwing area suffers from lack of illumination and the eye gets lost. Flash with a better beamer would have given you a catchlight for the eye and, at that shutter speed, probably would have lit up the wing too. Good times shooting terns, always a challenge!

Hi Bob- I think you may be able to bring up the shadows including the eye region during RAW development. There's a tonne of information in the D800 RAW file so I'm pretty sure it's there. Try the Exposure and Shadows sliders either on the whole image or with the Adjustment brush in the areas needing work.

BTW I think this is a Forster's Tern.

Thanks John, you were right there was plenty of detail there in the eye to be brought out! The D-800 rocks!
