This was taken on a overcast day, it looks like it may have been calling for rain, but I like how the BG made the AGF colors really stand out, well to me at least.

    Michael,

I am a sucker for feather detail and share images - this is well done. The colors are just great and the muted background really makes this image sing. The opportunity is the upper right hand corner - consider cloning the nick in the bark, always walk around the entire frame and ensuring the edges are clean and smooth.

One more thing: play with the crop one option is to take some from the top and bottom forcing more attention on the subject and reduce the negative space. Of course, this must be accomplished without making the picture too tight. Play with it using a piece of paper on the screen and repost if something more compelling grabs your eye. This is strong picture, love it, keep it up and thanks for sharing.

Thank you Jeff, I did not see the upper corner until you said something...I appreciate it.

I usually give a few look over but I flat out missed this one, no excuses! I am having a hard time getting the crops right, I try so hard with the "Rule of Thirds" but it just does not always come out that way, but I will Keep Pushin' on! LOL

Here is a repost per your suggestions and you were right.

Thanx again and look forward to seeing/talking with you and hearing your C+C!

    Lovely bird and pose.

You would still have a very strong image if you just take a little (but not this much) off the top. The rule of thirds is just a suggestion -- it isn't always the best composition.

Very nice portrait of a beautiful bird. Colors, sharpness, detail, pose, composition right on.
    Re-post much better, IMO.

    Michael,

Looking good, we can play with this for hours. I like it, another option would be more canvas on the right and more frame to look into - hence moving toward the 1/3 composition.

    Thank you Dianne!

    Rule of Thirds:

I am aware of this, and appreciate your understanding on it, and totally agree with you, but I have read so many Critiques, about the "Rule of Thirds", that I feel I must say something about it, just to cover that I know and realize it. ;)

I really like the repost, and I did miss what Jeff pointed out, and I saw the extra space, but I was wanting that 1/3, some how! LOL Just

    Thanx again!

    Thank you John!

I like the repost much better also, I am glad I decided to start posting as I know two set of eyes are better than one, several sets should be even better, but to many it could get cluttered! LOL Just kidding the more the merrier!

    Thanx again!

Thank you Jeff and for the suggestions!

It does look better and as I said, flat out missed the upper part of the perch.

Nope, this as far as I can go with it, I have not learned the "Canvas" part of it yet, I have read about but never used/tried it...sorry, it is, what it is, for me anyway. LOL

    Thanx again

    Have a good one!

Hi Michael, you have a really keeper with this one! Very nicely done. I find it difficult to deal with composition sometimes too, especially when I capture a bird perching like this on a branch that is mostly vertical. The cross shape made by the two (bird and branch) makes for a challenge in the cropping department. I like the repost, that one works better for my eye. The "thirds" thing is really over-achieving at being a "rule", it is too bad that the word got associated with it and that it is thrown around so much when there are lots of other compositional tools to be considered. I think it happened because so many beginning photography courses use that rule to get the student to move the subject away from the center of the frame.

You have excellent exposure, color rendition, detail, and pose. This picture is a great example to show photographers who think that overcast days are "bad" days to shoot. In fact, the soft, even light makes for wonderful shooting conditions. Love the technical formula, it worked really well!

Great shot Michael! Good pose and great details. I agree that a little canvas added to the right would help. If you have Photoshop, Artie has a great video on how to add canvas on his web site. Its not expensive and has a ton of great information in it.

I totally agree with you on the "Rule of Thirds" and cropping, it drives me crazy at times. I have no idea how it came about and I can see where it does make a difference in some images, but it does not always work. I feel like some just want to point it out just to be able to have something to say, in their Critiques. Not implying they are doing to be mean/hurtful, but to have "something to say" that sticks out to them.

I really try to make a image that others can enjoy or see something they may never get to in real life. I try and make it the best I can, but things happen beyond our control. As far as other photogs images. As long as it is clear, and in good focus, I can pretty much find good in any image, within reason. LOL

As far as the "overcast" shooting day, you will come to find out I am not your "normal" photographer! LOL I am a shooter, if I think I can get a shot, I will shoot and see, if it works great!, if not oh well, live and learn. I love shooting on overcast days and as you can see, it can work. ;)

Thanx again for the great C+C and look forward to seeing your work and talking with you more around the boards!

Thank you Michael, I appreciate it and the information...yes I do have CS6, but I have a problem, and I cannot watch videos...I am Hearing Impaired, I lost my hearing due to "life saving anti-biotics", most the Videos/DVDs that they online do not have CC/Subtitles and I cannot hear them...I can read like crazy! LOL

I have read a little bit about it and did find one site that does do CC/Subtitles on their Vids/DVDS but they want wayyy to much $$$$ for what they are offering. ;) So until I can find someone to show me or I find a CC/Subtitled training, Vid/DVD, it will have to wait. ;)

It drives me crazy that everyone is turning to videos online, especially the news sites! If I wanted to "watch" the news I would watch it on TV, I come online to "read" the news and such. But that is the way it is headed.

    Thanks again!
