Took this picture of an Anna's Hummingbird at a local park. I love the BG and the sharpness of the bird. Please let me know what you think.

Loi, lovely little Anna! Nice head angle and agree with your assessment about the sharpness of the bird. As for the background, it's certainly clean, but on my monitor, it appears flat for lack of a better descriptive. However, might just be my monitor. Nice capture.

Hi Jeannean,
I think the image was too dark and me trying to bring out the Red by lifting the shadow didn't help much. So I used the paint brush tool to brighten the Red on the head, increased Brightness, and Vibrance. Hopefully it will look a bit more lively. Thank you for your comments. Loi
Nice repost Loi. I'm glad you knew what I was talking about. The background looks more "alive" now. However, parts of the bird are a bit too bright now. How about something in between? I did a merge of the two and masked out parts to keep the colors of the original bird with some varying degrees of opacity, and kept the new background.
Loi, good job on the background - really looks good. The pose is nice and you have some pretty decent detail. Is this a large crop? It has the look of lost IQ due to cropping. I think the issue you are seeing is due to the quality of the light and the fact that you have (properly) exposed for the whites, but the dark areas are somewhat muddled. You can't fix it with global adjustments, but using the dodge tool and adding saturation with the sponge tool allows you to reclaim some detail and color in the head and gorget areas. I took the liberty of trying that with my version. I didn't make any other changes.

Hi Jeannean, thank you for your comments on the BG and the RP.
Kerry, your RP really brought out the beauty of the hummer. This is a crop from 18M to 6M pixels. I will need to learn how to use the dodge tool and the sponge tool! Thanks again.
Kerry, nice job on the RP! Happy to offer suggestions Loi. Even though I may not get it quite right, doing critiques helps me with my own photos.![]()
He does not look happy! LOL But a great shot of such a lil' fellow, great color and detail! I am jealous...I have not had much luck with these.
