    Default Female Kestrel Taking Off

    Attached Images Attached Images

This image of a female kestrel was taken in early March in Santa Barbara. There were a couple of distracting branches right across her body and wing. It took me a while to learn how to use the patch tool to remove them. I wish there was eye contact and a catch light and the perch was not so messy.

Original horizontal, cropped to vertical, added a little bit of canvas on top. I decided to crop close because the perch is quite messy.

I wish I had switched to an F10 and ISO-1000 for more shaprness.

    Appreciate your comments.

    Thank you

Love the wings up position here. Wish there were more light in the eye. I am not seeing the details I'd like here and would sharpen the bird a tad more. Good self-assessment on the use of a 2x. Once that 2x is on your body, set your aperture to a stop under wide open and set your ISO accordingly while leaving yourself the desired speed for the flight shots. You definitely had plenty of leeway with a 1DX.

Hi Loi, good choice of comp, and well timed to capture the raised wings. Before reading Marina's comment, I too feel it 'looks' a bit soft, even though you had a ss of 1/2500. Im fine with the perch, not too busy as posted.

Nice maximum reach wing spread. It's a really nice shot, I wish there was a catch light too.

Thank you everyone. The softness is for sure due to lens shake. I was too excited and may have forgotten to press my face against the back of the camera. I had other images that are sharper, but without the nice wing position. I will post one or two later. The 2X is definitely presents its own chalenge. Sometimes I have sharp images, other times not, so this is something I need to work on. Loi

Captured those stunning colors and markings nicely, loving the fully up stretched wings, light looks very nice as does the blue sky, yes a little soft which is a pity....good excuse to go back and try again

The body and wings are nice, a bit to busy on the bottom . . . my rig with my 2X all too frequently turns out "soft" also . . .

nice dynamic pose, a tad soft as mentioned but for the main issue is the lack of catchlight which makes the eye look a bit funny. you are almost there!

you should have zero problem with focus accuracy of 1DX and 2X...but it needs good technique.

Thank you everyone for your good feedback. Too bad about the catch light as Arash said. I have other images of this series with a catch light and a little bit sharper, but unfortunately, none with such a nice wing position.
