I'm back in the game and have been catching up on some of the great posts in my absence. Great discussions, posts and learnings all around!

Trying to break the flood of North American wildlife : This is a male giraffe from the Kalahari desert (Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) during a very green season after good rains in early 2012.
The sun was just rising and I love how it "kissed" his frame. Pretty much full frame. You can see the red sand dunes peeking out of the shrubbery behind him.

Hi Morkel - The comp works very well as does your choice of dof. I like the cool tones juxtaposed against the sun kissed areas. I might prefer a tiny bit more room below if you have it but not a deal breaker.

    Rachel

Yes it works for me, the light gives the image a lift. His horns and profile look great.

Hi Morkel, yep the vegetation really does frame the subject very nicely, therefore have you tried without the sky? Just another option perhaps?

Lovely, delicate lighting on the giraffe. I just read Steve K.'s suggestion to crop out the sky. That appeals to me as the bright sky pulls my eye away from the giraffe. The giraffe and the sun-kissed lighting stand out better totally surrounded only by the greens of the vegetation.

Great light in this one Morkel. Works for me with or without the sky. Nice to see one of these with a BG for the head of earth rather than sky.
