My first image(s) of this species too! I've seen these often before but never close enough for proper images. A small flock of five (3 drakes and 2 hens) provided lots of opportunities in a local pond last week. What a sweet little duck, only about 13 inches long, and blessed with an awesome array of subtle colours on its face...colours that mostly look only black from afar.

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4 TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/640s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld (lying flat on the ground, what's new?), small crop for comp (about 85% FF), usual eye work. Audio.

These little ducks are so much fun to watch and photograph in the spring. Love the low angle and the push of water Daniel, not often can you get close enough to them.
    Congrats on the new glass!

Hi Dan, you could have been in the water at this low perspective - great angle, and it shows off the wave so well. Excellent exposure on the head to show up the colours against the lighter BG. The droplets on the head puts this over the top.

Yes super shot Dan, the low angle and the subtle colours really show off this duck to it's best potential. I really like the wave too.

    Nicely captured Daniel,

Love the iridescence on the head feathers. As usual, great exposure on the whites.

I know it's probably just the nature of the water, but I may take a look at just a tad of CW rotation and compare.

Is this the first shared image with the 1.4x?

Absolutely lovely shot of this little guy.... iridescence and water droplets.... PERFECT. Like the small "bow wake" too. Exceptional perspective.

The water drops and wake does it for me. Love the iridescent colours in the plumage. Well done on the new lens - making the best of it in no time.

You have brought out the colors of this little duck quite well. The water drops are crystal clear and I love the silky smooth BG.
