Hi Peter,
this looks like Newbroni waterhole in Etosha! The Rhino is very impressive. Love the mud on it's body.
On the body, shoulder part and face are some highlights, which I would turn down or dodge. ( Might still wet parts on the body! ) Color wise, under the Rhino, the edge of the waterhole looks turquoise/blue-ish ! What time was it than and was there overcast? For me, when it was in Etosha at that Newbroni waterhole, the color of the ground does not look as it is over there. But this is just me, everybody has a different taste.
Ciao

That is some specimen you have photographed! Love his pose and the fact that he is covered in mud. Subject looks hot in places. I think this image could be much improved with some selective dodging and burning.

Magnificent rhino! I like the hind leg cocked. The image looks pale and hot in spots on my monitor. Maybe someone good with PP can suggest specific actions to try.

Hi Peter, personally I think it all looks OK, the whites or hotspots aren't blown and have still have tone within them. I like the soft muted tones, obviously very similar to your Elephants. The stance is a very powerful and dominating one and I very much like the way he is just poised on the lip & in the rim of the waterhole. Again, personal preference about adding some more tone or structure, but we have been there many times over the years so...
Perhaps a little more FG?

Hi Peter - nice to see a black rhino, especially one giving you such a great pose with head up, leg up and covered with mud. I know you like the tonal range to run the complete gamut so I expect the stronger highlights are purposeful. I also like the layers/lines of the bg. Only suggestion is looking at the waterline, does the image need the very slightest cw rotation?
TFS,
Rachel

Peter - I like the stark look in this image, which conveys the dry season in this part of the world.
Would possibly look at some slight color/highlight tweaks to take this up a notch.

Nice detail and soft light here, Peter. The subject goes without saying...
I see there's detail in the whites, but I would still like to see them toned down very slightly...my taste...
Can't wait for my first visit to this part of the world...!

Neat capture and a nice pose. The light looks a bit harsh to me which is such a problem for us nature photographers since we are limited to certain times of the day to shoot. I think you can make up for it with some toning down as suggested by others

After reading through the above comments, one thought is the leave the rhino as is and reduce the color and details of the bkgd. This would bring attention not only more to the rhino, but to the mud on the rhino. As I look at this impressive animal, my eye goes more quickly than I want to the yellow layers and dark spots of the bkgd. Maybe crop off the top just below that dark line to keep the eye more on the rhino.

Thank you all for your input, the highlights will vary depending on the screen u are viewing , I am not to concerned about them and agree with Steve that is detail and they are not clipped... Nancy your advice I agree with about toning down the colours in BKG.
Thanks again everyone for your advice always appreciated...
Morkel.. its a magical place to visit..
